On November 4th we launched our new After-School Wellness Club. It is an exciting start to health and wellness at our school! This program is supported by two grants, one from Americorps Colorado and another from the Colorado Health Foundation.
Lexi is our Americorps Member, helping to serve this club. Alexis (Lexi) Bernstein graduated with a B.A. from College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in Minnesota in 2017 and received her M.F.A. & Arts & Humanities at the University of Dundee in Scotland in 2019. Lexi is excited to join PPOS as the Food Security Champion through TeamUp Americorps! She will be working with students in the lunchroom, the classroom and, most importantly, the garden! During the after-school program, she will be facilitating education around cooking, growing, and eating healthy food while connecting food systems to the overall curriculum of PPOS. “When I am not dreaming about the perfect urban farm/art experience, you can find me rock climbing, playing with my cats or listening to podcasts.”
Registered students will participate in two sessions each day that will include both food security/nutrition and physical fitness. The food security/nutrition session will include gardening, cooking, nutrition, and many other topics. The physical activity session will include physical activity and games from the SPARK after school program. Fitness goals will be created and tracked throughout the program. In addition, students will be provided with an after school snack.
The club will run from 3:15-5:45* Monday-Thursday and 1:15-5:15* on Fridays. Families can sign up for a Monday/Wednesday club, Tuesday/Thursday club, and/or a Friday Club. The first registration will last until our Winter Break. Registration fees are on a sliding scale with two grants helping us to offset the costs to families this year.
All 6th grade students can attend this year for free as they will attend in the capacity of a volunteer leadership role.
Please see Ms. Jeanelle for registration forms, fee and sliding scale information.
