NOW HIRING: Special Education Teacher (“Advisor”)

The purpose of this position is to provide a clear, consistent structure for the classroom that ensures that the academic, social, and emotional needs of each Special Education student are met within the guidelines of the Individual Educational Program (IEP) course work.  The Special Education Advisor at Pagosa Peak Open School reports to the School Director

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current Colorado Education Specialist Credential.
  • Three or more years experience in teaching Special Education.
  • Ability to facilitate the group process, supervise people and work effectively with a team.
  • A positive, adaptable, flexible, and high-energy person that can guide our student’s transition to a least restrictive environment.
  • Ability to physically respond to physically active and aggressive children, adolescents, and young adults.
  • Effective organizational skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License.
  • Clearance of TB test and any other state or federal requirements.


  • Provide an individualized academic program for Special Education students in a classroom setting.
  • Perform all duties related to the development of the IEP, i.e. assessment, goal setting, and implementation.
  • Evaluate student progress as required by program.
  • Work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians and support staff.

Assistant Teacher (Paraprofessional)
Assist professional school personnel in classrooms, educational programs, lunchrooms, and other areas as needed. The Assistant Advisor works under close supervision of the  lead classroom advisor,special education advisor, and school director.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Meet the Highly Qualified certification requirements including having an Associate’s (or higher) degree.
· Strong skills in reading, writing, and mathematics and to be able to demonstrate knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics.
· Ability to develop good relationships with students, parents and staff.
· Ability to be sensitive and to relate to students with warmth, friendliness, and understanding.
· Ability to work with special educational students.
